To Operate: Fully depress the
tail switch to turn it on. Partially depress the switch to cycle
modes. Fully depress the tail switch again to turn it off. If you
leave it off for 60 seconds or more, when you turn it on again, the
MTJ1 will return to the last mode you were using. Turn it on sooner
and it will cycle to the next mode.
The rugged solid stainless steel body makes the MTJ1 slightly heavier
than some AA flashlights, but it will withstand heavier use that
plastic or even anodized aluminum flashlights. You could probably run
over the MTJ1 with your car without breaking it and you
can easily remove scratches from the finish with a piece of fine
wet-or-dry sand paper or even a ScotchBrite pad and no
one will ever know.
Due to the higher amperage draw (and more light) of the Cree Q5-WC, it is advisable to use
NiMH rechargeable batteries. Alkaline batteries are not able
to meet the needs of high amperage devices and will not perform to your
satisfaction.
Using a 14500, the MTJ1 becomes a
pocket monster and it throws a
tremendous amount of light. It also generates more heat. Medium with a 14500 is
similar to High using a AA battery. Low is equivalent to Medium with a
AA.
It this is not the last flashlight you ever buy, it will at least be your favorite.
FIW Battery Life Test Results:
We tested the MTJ1 with a fully charged Sanyo Eneloop 2000mAh AA battery and got the following results. (your mileage may vary)
Low Setting
- We tail stood it in a room with no windows and the beam reflected off
of the ceiling, casting a nice glow throughout the entire room. After twelve
hours, we shut it off because we had other things to do. At that time,
there was no degradation in light and I am sure it would have kept
running much longer. During this test, the flashlight body never
got warm.
High Setting- After 1.5 hours,
the light dimmed to an equivalent of low mode, still usable
but only for close quarters. We turned it off at that point. A little
while into this test, the stainless steel body got uncomfortably warm
and difficult to hold, but this shows that the heat sinking
connectivity and capabilities were functioning properly, protecting the
driver circuitry from damage.
Note: Holding a warm/hot flashlight in your hands helps dissipate heat away from the flashlight, thus protecting the circuitry.
We did not test battery longevity in the Medium and Strobe modes.
Conclusion - The MTJ1 delivers an extraordinary amount of light with a respectable battery life. You can choose Low-Med-High modes depending on your need for light or battery life, Strobe and SOS modes for emergency signaling.
