The Scout Fire Steel is a bit longer than the Sport and that extra 1/2 inch will give you 15% more striking area resulting in more sparks for a quicker fire. Still small enough to fit into your pocket or hang from your belt, yet large enough to start fires for an entire Boy Scout troop for an entire year or more.
The Scout Fire Steel is protected in a
rugged polyethylene tube that you remove when you are ready to use it.
This protects your fire steel free against damage and debris. A striker is
included and both are attached to a chrome key ring. As your Fire Steel
wears down, the polyethylene tube will contract to remain tight.
A
brisk scape with the striker results in an impressive shower of sparks
that will easily light even a dry cotton ball. One saturated with
petroleum jelly is even better.
